Exclusive: Peterborough open talks to sign Accrington star Ben Woods

Peterborough have opened preliminary talks to sign Accrington midfielder Ben Woods, sources have told Football Insider.

The League One club are working on a deal to land the 24-year-old in the summer window, after Darren Ferguson‘s side finished a lowly 18th in League One last season.

Woods signed a new Accrington contract in January that runs until the summer of 2027, but Football Insider sources have said that Peterborough pounced early to open talks over signing him.

Accrington had a disappointing campaign last term and finished a lowly 21st in League Two, but Woods was a shining light and ended as their joint-top scorer with nine goals from midfield.

Peterborough transfer plan made clear with Woods pursuit

Football Insider revealed on 5 May that Peterborough were on the verge of signing prolific forward Kyrell Lisbie from Braintree Town, and his arrival at London Road was confirmed at the end of the month.

Lisbie netted 17 times across all competitions for the National League side last season, and Woods could add further goals if their talks with the Accrington number eight move into an advanced stage.

Peterborough could lose their own frontman this summer in the form of Kwame Poku – a player described as “the next Ivan Toney” – and Ferguson’s side are on the hunt for more goalscorers.

Football Insider Verdict

The Posh’s below-par campaign wasn’t all bad – beating Birmingham City 2-0 in the EFL Trophy Final at Wembley – but they’ve already lost second goalscorer Hector Kyprianou, who will join Watford on 1 July.

Rangers and Birmingham are both keen on a move for Poku after his 12 league goals last season, but given Posh are a club renowned for their buy low, sell high transfer policy, expect Woods to be part of a revival next term.

This is a club who are masters of the low-budget deals.
