Exclusive: Pundit suggests West Ham board may have doubts after Moyes transfer claim
Noel Whelan suggests the West Ham board may have doubts over dishing out transfer funds to David Moyes during the January window.
The former Leeds United striker and broadcast pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the new manager’s relatively short contract at the London Stadium could limit the funds he has available this month.
Moyes, who has signed a deal until 2021, claims that there is “money to spend” over the winter window should he need it, the Hammers having invested heavily over recent years.
However, Noel says the top brass in east London will be wary of putting their hands in their pockets, highlighting how Moyes could be replaced and a new manager stuck with players he does not want.
Whelan told Football Insider: “It’s always one of these windows that, because you haven’t got a manager that is signed to a two or three-year contract, you’ve got to be very careful as to who you’re giving the money to.
“If he does do well, then obviously he might get an extension and he might start as manager next year but what you don’t want to do is start giving money to someone where another manager’s going to come in and is inheriting players he wouldn’t have bought himself.
“You’ve got to be very careful in this window and the money you give to a manager who is only temporarily in charge.”
Moyes suffered defeat to Leicester in his first game back with the Hammers but saw his side thrash Bournemouth 4-0 in his second outing in the dugout.
In other West Ham news, Football Insider can reveal the club are in talks with Joe Cole.
