Exclusive: Robinson in awe of ‘Old-fashioned’ Aston Villa ace who ‘doesn’t shirk’ responsibility

Paul Robinson gushed about Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn and revealed that he thought the 25-year-old was delivering the goods for both club and country.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international shared that while he thought Scotland had been poor recently, he still had nothing but praise for McGinn.

The Villans midfielder scored and registered an assist during Scotland’s 2-1 victory over Cyprus on Saturday, in order to help his nation secure their second win on the bounce.

Robinson revealed that you always know what you were going to get from McGinn and described the 25-year-old as being an old-fashioned midfielder who doesn’t shirk his responsibilities.

When asked if McGinn impressing for a struggling Scotland side showcased his tremendous character, Robinson told Football Insider: “They’ve had the security of the play-off place because of the Nations League win so their performances and failure to qualify from their group have been poor.

“They’ve slowly improved, but McGinn’s level of performances always stays the same.

“I think he has been very good in the Premier League, you know what you get, he’s an old-fashioned, hard-working box-to-box midfielder, he’s got a great engine on him and he doesn’t shirk his responsibilities.

“He makes his tackles and I think he has been very very good for Aston Villa and Scotland this year.”

McGinn has regularly featured for the Villans this season as he has featured 14 times across all competitions and has racked up two goals as well as two assists in his outings.

The Scotland international has been at Villa Park since joining from Hibernian in August 2018 and is contracted to stay with the club until 2024.
