Exclusive: Sheffield United’s Alex Matos opens talks to join new club

Sheffield United midfielder Alex Matos has opened talks to join Swedish side AIK, sources have told Football Insider.

The 21-year-old old has been given the green light to leave Bramall Lane on loan this month.

Several English clubs have expressed an interest in Matos this month, but Swedish giants AIK are in pole position to agree a deal.

The former Chelsea youngster has made just eight appearances for Sheffield United in the Championship so far this term, and he could now be set to head out and gain more first-team experience.

Alex Matos set for unique experience in Allsvenskan

Louie Marsh is closing in on a Sheffield United loan exit, and now Matos appears set to follow suit as the Blades look to trim down some of the younger members of their squad in January.

The South Yorkshire outfit paid an undisclosed fee to sign the midfielder from his boyhood club Chelsea at the end of the summer transfer window, after he impressed during a loan at Oxford United last season.

Matos penned a three-year deal with Chris Wilder’s side, but has since struggled to break into the starting XI on a regular basis.

He is now set for something of a unique experience as he closes in on a move to the Swedish Allsvenskan.

AIK finished seventh in the 2025 campaign, and are now about to play a series of friendlies ahead of their cup competition getting underway on 22 February.

Their next league campaign doesn’t get underway until 5 April, meaning Matos may only play a handful of league games for his loan club, if a deal is struck until the end of the English season.

Sheffield United lead the race to sign Rangers midfielder

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Sheffield United are leading the race to sign Joe Rothwell, with the midfielder out in the cold at Rangers.

Wilder is keen to strengthen his options in the middle of the park, and the two-time Championship promotion winner has emerged as one of their key targets for the January window.

Rothwell’s exit at Rangers is seen as an inevitability, given that he hasn’t made a competitive appearance for the Glasgow giants since 2 November.

The 31-year-old has a wealth of experience in the Championship, and Sheffield United are likely to be the next beneficiaries of that.

The Blades are about to lose one midfielder in Matos, but could soon be set to welcome another through the door in Rothwell.
