Exclusive: Steve McClaren could quit Man United in dramatic twist

Steve McClaren could quit Man United after being pushed down the coaching pecking order at the club, sources have told Football Insider.

The arrival of a new coaching team including ex-Man United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has led to a backroom shake-up and McClaren, 63, is one of the fall guys.

McClaren was close to Erik ten Hag last season and was a key tactical sounding board but his position is now under threat and sources say he is ready to quit before he is sacked.

The ex-England manager had acted as assistant manager since re-joining the club in 2022 but has now been relegated to the title ofa technical coach.

Van Nistelrooy has now been appointed as the club’s new assistant manager alongside fellow Dutchmen Rene Hake, and Jelle ten Rouwelaar has been brought in as a goalkeeping coach.

Things are all change in the director’s box too with the appointments of Dan Ashworth as sporting director, Jason Wilcox as technical director, and ex-Manchester City man Omar Berrada as CEO.

The club hopes that modernising their structure will help them return to former glories.

McClaren rejoined the club he had been so successful at with Sir Alex Ferguson in May 2022 as a member of Ten Hag’s new coaching team.

The 63-year-old has since become an integral part of the coaching staff but could now be forced out as the club restructures following a disappointing season in which they finished 8th.

Man United are currently midway through their pre-season tour of the USA which McClaren didn’t join following surgery on his foot.

Stuck at Carrington, McClaren is currently working with players who may leave the club before the August 30th transfer deadline.

In other news, Man United have agreed terms with Bayern Munich right-back.
