Exclusive: Sydney respond to third Portsmouth bid for Hayden Matthews

Portsmouth have had three bids rejected for Sydney FC defender Hayden Matthews, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship giants have made the centre-back, 20, one of their top targets before the close of the transfer window and have made multiple attempts to get a deal over the line.

But the Australian A-League side have turned down three Pompey offers, including the latest bid of £900,000 for the player.

With just a few days remaining before the transfer window closes, Portsmouth will need to return with an improved offer once again.

Matthews became an important member of the Sydney FC squad last season, making 18 appearances after breaking into the team.

The central defender’s is under contract with the Australian club expires in 2027, which puts them in a strong negotiating position.

Portsmouth are currently adjusting to life back in the Championship following their promotion last season, and they have made an undefeated start to the campaign.

Despite that, John Mousinho is still looking to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes this week.

After conceding five goals in their opening three league games, focusing on strengthening this area of the pitch has been a priority for Mousinho.

At the other end of the field, Portsmouth have finalised a deal to sign Brighton striker Mark O’Mahony on loan.

Football Insider confirmed that the 19-year-old has passed a medical and agreed terms with the Championship side.
