Exclusive: Tottenham will be in firing line amid agent bombshell – Robinson
Paul Robinson insisted Tottenham will be in the firing line if they spend big money in the next transfer window having furloughed their non-playing staff.
However, the former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, believes Jose Mourinho would not have agreed to join the club unless there was the promise of funds.
As revealed by Football Insider, a leading agent dropped what will be a bombshell for many fans that the club know they cannot now spend huge amounts on a single signing in the upcoming window.
Spurs announced that 550 non-playing staff are to be placed on furlough leave to “protect jobs” amid the financial struggles of the coronavirus crisis.
The club were heavily criticised for their decision after revealing a pre-tax profit of £87million for the year ending June 2019.
This could have ramifications. Harry Kane expressed that he would only stay with the Lilywhites if they were progressing year on year and not “for the sake of it”.
When asked by Football Insider if Daniel Levy could be seen to be spending large sums in the summer after the furlough decision, Robinson said: “I do not think Mourinho would have come to the club knowing he was not going to be able to spend anything in the window. I suspect there is some budget there.
“But I strongly suspect he will need to trade out before he can get people in.
“There will definitely be questions asked if they spend £100million in the transfer window after furloughing staff. You would question the reasoning behind it.”
As revealed by Football Insider Spurs are considering a move for free agent Willian this summer and this may be an avenue Levy feels is better suited given the current scrutiny on the club.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that sights have been set on signing Dutch wonderkid this summer.
