Exclusive: Vincent Kompany told to pay £50m to complete Burnley signing

Burnley have slapped a £50million price tag on the head of star defender Maxime Esteve following their promotion, sources have told Football Insider.

Esteve, 23, was crucial to the Clarets’ success in the 2024-25 campaign and was named in the Championship Team of the Year as Scott Parker’s side achieved automatic promotion.

The centre-back is now attracting attention from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, who are managed by ex-Burnley boss Vincent Kompany.

Esteve played 16 times for Kompany in the 2023-24 campaign – before the Belgian coach left Turf Moor for Germany last summer (2024).

Kompany keen on Burnley star Esteve

Burnley are very keen to keep the Montpellier-born ace at the club into the 2025-26 campaign and believe the new £50million price tag will keep suitors at arm’s length.

The Clarets are confident Esteve will remain with the club as he is under contract until June 2029.

He started every Championship game in the 2024-25 campaign and scored once as Parker’s side conceded just 16 goals in 46 second-tier games.

Burnley will be desperate to continue that formidable defensive record in the top flight next term as they ramp up their transfer preparations.

Esteve came through the ranks at Montpellier and joined the Clarets on loan in February 2024 before joining permanently months later.

Newcastle could overpay to land Trafford’

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (31 May) that Newcastle may be forced to overpay to land a deal for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford

Trafford is seen as a long-term replacement for Nick Pope but the deal will be difficult to pull off for the Magpies this summer.

Parker is keen to hold on to his best players following Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League and will not let Trafford leave cheaply.
