Exclusive: Whelan claims Everton attacker ‘Desperate’ for 47yo to land job amid key development
Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is “desperate” for Duncan Ferguson to be named the club’s new manager.
That is according to ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 22-year-old’s instant transformation in fortunes under the caretaker boss.
Everton announced this evening that Ferguson, 47, will take charge for the second time this weekend, when the club face Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
His first match at the helm coincided with an uplifting 3-1 win over Chelsea, which was marked by a man-of-the-match performance from Calvert-Lewis.
The hit-and-miss young forward scored twice as he produced comfortably his best display of the season after being in and out of the starting XI under Marco Silva.
“Look at what happened with Calvert-Lewin last weekend, he was a different player,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He was clearly desperate to perform for Ferguson, and for him to get the job.
“Maybe this is what Everton need. Someone who knows the club inside out, knows the players, what makes them tick and how to get the best out of them.
“Going for expensive foreign managers hasn’t worked. Duncan Ferguson has seen everything day in, day out.
“If he wins three of the next five games, I would be giving it to him full time.”
The Toffees have handed the reins temporarily to Ferguson, but are looking for a full-time manager.
They sacked Silva last week after a dreadful start to the season had left the team in the relegation zone.
