Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Tyrone Mings and suggested Leeds United should take advantage of a potential contract clause to sign him this summer.

The former Elland Road striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 27-year-old England international will have no shortage of suitors if Aston Villa suffer relegation this season.

Ben White, who has made 37 appearances in the Championship, has been a huge success at Elland Road since arriving on a season-long loan from Brighton.

However, as revealed by Football Insider in October, Liverpool are making plans to rival United for the signature of the 22-year-old.

When asked if signing a centre-back was paramount for Leeds if promotion to the Premier League is achieved, Whelan told Football Insider: “The spine of a side is so important. Look at how important Virgil Van Dijk has been and Vincent Kompany over the past few years.

“Mings is a fantastic player and a great buy. I would have snapped him up after the way he played last season.

“He got his England cap as well so it goes to show he is a very good centre-half. He has every attribute you would like – decent on the ball, strong, committed, good stature and very quick as well.

“He is player that is only going to get better but if Aston Villa go down he will be in demand by other Premier League clubs. There may be a clause in his contract but I would presume Aston Villa will want more than £30million.”

Mings has made 27 appearances for a Dean Smith side that sit 19th in the table having conceded the most goals in the Premier League this season – 56.

In other Leeds United news, Danny Mills has told Football Insider club should think carefully before signing Premier League shot-stopper.
