Exclusive: Wolves could terminate Tommy Doyle’s Birmingham City deal
Wolves’ new manager Rob Edwards could terminate Tommy Doyle’s loan at Birmingham City in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Doyle joined Birmingham from Wolves in the summer transfer window, after just one permanent season at Molineux.
The 24-year-old midfielder had joined the club on loan from Man City, earning him a permanent move under former boss Gary O’Neil.
Sources say Edwards is a big admirer of Doyle and a return to Molineux in the upcoming window could be on the cards.
Edwards became Wolves’ new manager after the Midlands club had sacked Vitor Pereira after less than a year in charge.
Birmingham City managerial change could hinder Tommy Doyle plans
Doyle has started the past four matches for Birmingham, who are currently 11th in the Championship, with ambitions to get promoted to the Premier League.
There is pressure on current manager Chris Davies, with former Wolves boss O’Neil a contender to take over at Birmingham if they were to fire the 40-year-old.
Having signed Doyle for Wolves, O’Neil would likely want to keep the midfielder at St Andrew’s for the remainder of the season.
O’Neil has been out of work since being sacked by Wolves last season, and did not return to the club despite conversations with the hierarchy after Pereira’s sacking.
Rob Edwards planning Wolves January business
Wolves are currently bottom of the Premier League table with just two points from their opening 11 fixtures.
Edwards may revert Wolves’ transfer strategy to signing more proven Premier League players in a bid to save the club from relegation.
Dwight McNeil and Kalvin Phillips are both targets for Wolves, with neither getting much game time at Everton or Man City.
Wolves also want to strengthen their attack, with another striker to help Jorgen Strand Larsen seen as a priority.
The club tried to sign Ireland striker Troy Parrott in the summer, and that interest could be reignited amid the 23-year-old’s impressive form.
