Exclusive: Wyness shares intriguing verdict on Everton appealing again – ‘we’re not finished yet’

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has insisted the club “may not be finished yet” despite the Premier League releasing their appeal verdict on Monday (26 February).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the club may fight some details of the appeal verdict with the Premier League.

It was confirmed on Monday (26 February) that Everton have seen their deduction for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) reduced from 10 to six points upon appeal.

The Premier League upheld two of Everton’s nine complaints about their 10-point penalty, but rejected the other seven and have not made those details public.

Sean Dyche’s side could face another separate punishment for a different breach of PSR rules – with that hearing expected before the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Wyness told Football Insider: “I think the club will err on the side of accepting the appeal verdict and moving forward.

“But we may not be finished yet.

“With the fact that we have a second case coming up with a potential second sanction, there may well be points that the club want to clarify and fight again with the Premier League.

“That seems the only way to avoid a second sanction.

“To admit that they’ve made two pretty big errors on major things – it’s not good for the Premier League.

“Certainly the time this process has taken, as I’ve said on several occasions, is particularly disappointing.

“Until we know more about the details of the appeal, I can’t say just how good this outcome is.

“We need full transparency and it has been desperately lacking. It’s not really good enough.”
