Done deal: Celtic finalise paperwork on enforcer transfer

Celtic have finalised the signing of defender Marvin Commper from RB Leipzig, it has been confirmed.

The Bhoys announced on their official website on Wednesday that the German centre-back has moved to Parkhead for an undisclosed fee ahead of the January transfer window, agreeing terms to a two and a half year deal.

Commper, 32, will join up with the squad next month during the Scottish football winter break, and his first-team debut could come against Brechin City in the Scottish Cup later that month.

The defensive enforcer has experience of playing in both Germany and Italy, having had spells at Hoffenheim and Fiorentina.

Unfortunately for the Hoops, he is ineligible to play in the Europa League last 32 clash against Zenit in February but will add that much needed depth to Brendan Rodgers’ centre-back options.

Football insider verdict

Celtic’s defensive issues have been there for all to see in recent weeks. The poor performances in the Champions League have been followed by worse performances in Scotland, most recently in the 4-0 loss to Hearts at Tynecastle. With both Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic dreadfully out of form, the signing of an experienced defender like Commper comes at the right time for the Hoops. Manager Rodgers will be hoping that he can use his experience to influence how Celtic’s other defenders players. All being well, he will also be bedded into the side by the time next year’s Champions League qualifiers begin.
