Expert backs Nottingham Forest deal for Jesse Lingard as fans told to stop ‘screaming’
People should stop “screaming” about Jesse Lingard’s Nottingham Forest contract as the deal has the potential to pay for itself.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Lingard, 29, was announced as Nottingham Forest’s latest summer signing on Thursday (21 July).
On the same day, The Times reported the attacker could earn up to £200,000-a-week after signing a one-year deal with the Premier League new boys.
However, Wenham insists the contract will pay for itself if Lingard helps to keep the club in the Premier League next season.
“One side of the argument is that Forest haven’t been in the league for 23 years,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“One-year deal, works out at what? £10million over the course of the contract? If they have put him in there to be the main man, he has shown at West Ham he can thrive in that role, if he keeps them in the league then it is worth it.
“It pays for itself. They have spent big money actually, Forest. Credit to the owner who realises how Forest are a big club and have done things in the past.
“They have a decent support and a good stadium. They are going for it. I personally don’t think the Lingard deal is that bad because it is a one-year deal.

“They won’t be stuck in the Championship paying those wages if they go down. Some people are screaming about it but it isn’t a long-term thing.
“Would Forest buy Lingard for £8million or £10million? Probably.”
