Expert baffled by ‘ridiculous’ Danny Ings update as Aston Villa respond to new offer
Noel Whelan has claimed it would be “ridiculous” for Aston Villa to part with Danny Ings in the January window.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there will be a big pool of potential suitors for the 30-year-old – and “guaranteed” he would score goals with regular game time.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook (3 January), Aston Villa are willing to listen to offers for Ings this month amid reported interest from the likes of Everton, Southampton and Bournemouth.
According to the Daily Mail (4 January), the Toffees have had a loan bid for Ings rejected – with Villa only willing to let the striker leave permanently.
The Midlands giants have already let one striker depart in the mid-season window, with Cameron Archer joining Championship side Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season.
Ings netted a crucial equaliser from the bench on Wednesday (4 January) as Aston Villa drew 1-1 in derby action against Wolves.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “If he’s not wanted by the new manager, and they’re looking to bring someone else in – there does have to be movement with players like Ings.
“But look, there’ll be so many potential suitors out there for a player like Danny Ings. I guarantee you, if he plays regularly – he will score goals.
“But it doesn’t look like he’s going to get that game time at Aston Villa.

“Personally, I think it would be ridiculous to get rid of him. They don’t have another player like him, and sometimes you need other options to turn to.
“If Emery doesn’t want him, I’m sure there are plenty of clubs who will take a goalscorer like him.”
