Expert can’t believe Darwin Nunez after ‘brilliant’ Liverpool development

Darwin Nunez will hit the ground running for Liverpool when the club returns to competitive action.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Uruguay striker’s latest outing.

Nunez, 23, fired back at his critics by scoring four goals in a pre-season clash against RB Leipzig on Thursday (21 July).

The hitman had been ridiculed on social media during the Reds’ first games of pre-season as he missed a host of chances to score in games against Man United and Crystal Palace.

Kenny is in no doubt over Nunex’s quality and insists Liverpool fans should not be worried about the player struggling to score next season.

“It’s pre-season, it’s about getting fit,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s not about how many goals you score or how many you win by. It’s about getting those players fit and ready for the start of the season and minimising injuries.

“It’s always good to score goals, of course it is. It’s confidence. From experience, it’s like goalkeepers getting clean sheets, it is what you are there for.

“I’m sure Nunez will be a hit for Liverpool. I have no doubt about it whatsoever. There is nothing to worry about.

“Four goals against Leipzig isn’t bad, is it? What a brilliant performance from him.”

Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 total outings for Benfica during the 2021-22 season.

Six of those came in 10 Champions League appearances with two coming against his new side.
