Expert defends Erling Haaland amid ‘terrible’ Man City development
Man City star Erling Haaland is not to blame for his side’s poor form in the Premier League.
That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the City man’s form.
Haaland was criticised after his side lost 1-0 to Manchester City last weekend (5 February).
After the game, speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher suggested the Norwegian had “picked the wrong club”.
McManus doesn’t understand the recent criticism aimed at Haaland.
“I don’t get that argument, I have to say,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“Haaland has scored 25 goals this season. He is doing everything right. Man City failing to score against Tottenham is not his fault. The defence was terrible
“The criticism I have seen is unfair. Of course, you need your best players to step up in the big games but it was the defence that lost that game against Spurs.
“To be fair, I also thought Tottenham’s defenders were outstanding. You look at the other quality players Man City had on the pitch, they didn’t score either.
“So to come out and blame the loss on Haaland makes absolutely no sense to me. Where would City be without him this season?
“They would still be up there but they would have dropped a few more points. When you have a player like Haaland in the side, you have to play to his strengths and Man City didn’t do that.
“He barely touched the ball in that game because there was no service, You could see he was trying to get on the ball but it just wasn’t falling for him.

“I’ve been there as a striker. It’s not fun.
“But to blame Haaland for that result is just wrong in my opinion.”
