Expert demands answers from Tottenham chiefs after ‘staggering’ transfer development

Tottenham must explain their reasoning behind placing a £12million bid for Brighton star Leandro Trossard.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

As per David Ornstein (16 January), Tottenham made a £12million verbal offer to sign Trossard earlier this month.

The 28-year-old was axed from the Brighton squad for Saturday’s clash against Liverpool and has gone public with his desire to quit this month amid a fall-out with the club.

Wenham has been left baffled by a lack of clear strategy from Tottenham this month.

“The news that broke the other day was that we finally made an offer for a player, Leandro Trossard,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Then the news came through that it was £12million. Is that what we are offering for players these days?

“That bid was probably spread out over six years at £2.5million a season or something like that. It is staggering to me that we have not made any progress on transfers.

“If Conte has identified this player as someone he wants to improve the side, you have to make a reasonable offer to Brighton.

“I know he doesn’t have long left on his contract and I know he isn’t playing but he is a quality player, until recently he was one of their most important players.

“I’m all for getting a good deal but, I’m sorry, did we ever think Brighton were going to accept that? It looks like we haven’t gone back in either, so, what was the plan there?

“Put a really low offer in then walk away completely if it’s not accepted?

Antonio Conte looks on during his time as Tottenham manager

We have two weeks of the window left and there doesn’t seem to be a clear strategy.

“Someone from the club needs to come out and explain.”
