Expert dismisses Neil Warnock claim after Tottenham open Djed Spence talks

Djed Spence’s perceived attitude problems will not be a problem if he signs for Tottenham.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Football Insider revealed on 23 May that Tottenham had opened talks to sign Spence, 21, from Middlesbrough and were in pole position to seal a deal.

Former Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock made the decision to loan the right-back to Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2021 amid perceived attitude issues.

However, Wenham does not see this as an issue.

“Neil Warnock is quite a character and I’m sure he does provoke reactions from people,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Spence is young, he isn’t 23 or 24 with a bad attitude, he’s a 21-year-old kid. I don’t see it as a bad attitude, I see it as lighthearted fun.

“He has done remarkably well. He was booted out of Middlesbrough and has excelled. He was in the Champions League team of the year at right wing-back.

“We saw him on his hands and knees after the final whistle in the play-off final. It meant a lot to him to be part of that Forest team.

“I have no issues and I am pleased to see the reports that we are winning the race to sign him.

“I said a few weeks ago that I was 99% sure we were going to sign so I’m glad I won’t be having to pay the fee myself to keep my reputation intact.”

Spence enjoyed a stellar 2021-22 campaign while on loan at Nottingham Forest, making 45 appearances in all competitions.

He helped the club return to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.
