Expert: Erik ten Hag under ‘massive pressure’ at Man United amid Frenkie de Jong development

Erik ten Hag is already under “massive pressure” at Man United.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ transfer business.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (27 June) that Man United are in advanced talks to sign De Jong for £64.4million and that an agreement was expected in the next 48 hours.

De Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in the summer of 2019 and instantly became a key player during a difficult period for the club.

De Jong’s arrival at Man United will reunite him with Van de Beek, who was his midfield partner at Ajax when the club reached the Champions League semi-finals during the 2018-19 season.

McLeish insists there will be massive pressure at the club once De Jong arrives.

“It’s a massive job at Man United,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“We are all envious of managers who get the Manchester United job, we all want to be there.

“But with that role comes massive pressure, massive pressure to get it right and Man United have to get this signing right.

“He has to hit the ground running and Man United have to get back among the top four.

“At the moment it looks like the construction isn’t quite there for the club as far as I can see.”

New boss Erik ten Hag is yet to make any summer additions – despite releasing six stars at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Chief among the released players was £93.2million record signing Paul Pogba.
