Expert expects new Tyrone Mings role after latest Aston Villa development

Tyrone Mings is set for an extended run back in the Aston Villa starting XI.

That’s according to former Villains boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender’s return to the side.

Mings was restored to the starting lineup for Saturday’s (13 August) 2-1 win over Everton after missing his side’s opening game of the season.

Plenty had been made about Mings’ future in the buildup to the game

McLeish expects Mings to continue as a regular starter after the Villains returned to winning ways.

“Gerrard got a bit of criticism after losing to Bournemouth,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“Then there were things going on between Mings and Souness. It was almost back to service as usual when Mings came back in and they got the victory.

“It doesn’t look as if he is going to change anything after that. You associate it with business as usual. You would now think Mings is back to the level Gerrard expects from him.

“That’s all you want from any player, to play at his highest level every week. Especially defenders because they have to be the most consistent players.

“They have to be vigilant, keeping out the best wingers and attackers. That is where you must show the most consistency.”

On Tuesday (16 August) sources told Football Insider that Diego Carlos is expected to be out for the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

This limits Steven Gerrard’s defensive options and could lead to plenty of game time for Mings.

In other news, Philippe Coutinho could be axed by Aston Villa as new details emerge.
