Expert ‘fears’ Everton will copy Sunderland after transfer latest

Everton need to get “quality” signings over the line quickly if they are to avoid another relegation battle.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees’ recent struggles.

A full-strength Everton were beaten 4-0 by MLS side Minnesota United in a pre-season clash on 21 July.

Last season’s top scorer, Richarlison, has already left the Toffees this summer and the only arrival has been James Tarkowski.

When asked if Everton should prepare for another relegation battle in the 2022-23 season, Kenny told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild, “Yeah, I really do.

“Their best player has gone and they have not strengthened. They only stayed up by the skin of their teeth last season.

“So I don’t know what they are expecting to happen this year. I really do fear for Everton. They are in the process of building a new ground, this is the time they need to deliver.

“Maybe that is why they aren’t investing, they have started on that new ground. What is the point in having this amazing stadium if you are going down to the Championship?

“Just because they are Everton, that doesn’t mean they are going to come straight back up. I do fear for them. We have seen what happens to teams.

“It took Sunderland four years to get out of League One. Everton need to get some quality into that squad quickly.

“On the friendly, the season I got promoted with Sheffield United, we played non-league teams before going to China and playing three matches.

“We lost all three, didn’t score and conceded 10. We sat in the hotel before we went home saying ‘we need to pull our finger out here, we could go down’.

“We then went and won 12 out of 14 at the start of the season, you couldn’t write it.”
