Expert fears Tottenham about to make significant mistake amid David Raya transfer update

Tottenham should target a move for Jordan Pickford ahead of a swoop for Brentford stopper David Raya.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

According to The Telegraph (8 January), Tottenham are tracking Brentford shot-stopper Raya, 27, as they search for Lloris’ long-term successor.

Lloris announced his retirement from international football on Monday (9 January) and is out of contract at Spurs at the end of the 2023-24 season.

The World Cup winner, who has racked up almost 450 appearances for Tottenham, has been criticised for a number of high-profile gaffes this season.

Wenham insists Raya is not the man to replace Lloris.

“This is one for the summer because Lloris is still an outstanding goalkeeper,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“My only issues with the names who have been linked with Tottenham over the last few months, Emi Martinez, Jordan Pickford, Raya, none of them are as good as Hugo was when we bought him.

“When I say that, I mean Hugo was young and experienced when we signed him, coming in off the back of a great season with Lyon.

“None of those goalkeepers are as good as Lloris was then. I actually don’t think any of those goalkeepers are as good as Lloris is now.

“Pickford would be my choice of the four, more so than David Raya. Lloris is getting on and he’s making big mistakes but he is still a good Premier League keeper.”

Raya has started every match for Brentford this season and has been a mainstay since joining the Bees in the Championship in 2019.

He played as Spurs drew 2-2 with the Bees on Boxing Day.
