Expert: Financial ‘limit’ could see Kalvin Phillips quitting Leeds United after Sky update

Leeds United will not break their wage structure to keep Kalvin Phillips at the club.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s future.

On 31 May, Sky Sports reported that Phillips, 26, has “made it clear he wants to stay” at Leeds this summer.

It was also claimed Leeds are under no pressure to sell having avoided relegation on the final day of the 2021-22 Premier League season.

The Times reported on 23 May that Man City are considering a bid for the England international after making him their top midfield target for the summer transfer window.

Kenny claims Leeds won’t pay over the odds to keep their star man despite interest from the Premier League champions.

“He’s Leeds through and through,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He came through the academy, he’s been excellent and he’s got into the England squad when he’s been at Leeds.

“You have to pay him what you have to pay him. Obviously, Leeds might have a limit, whether that is enough to keep him with other clubs interested, time will tell.

“I’m sure Leeds will pay what they can afford to keep someone like Kalvin Phillips. They missed him massively last year.

Phillips struggled with a long-term injury during the 2021-22 campaign, only making 20 league appearances.

He played every minute of the club’s last six games as they survived on the final day.
