Expert fumes at ‘cheap’ Tottenham as Clement Lenglet deal lambasted

Clement Lenglet will not be at Tottenham next season after failing to prove he is an upgrade on Ben Davies.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Lenglet joined Tottenham on loan from Barcelona during the summer of 2022.

He started as Spurs lost 2-0 to Aston Villa on Sunday (1 January), with the defence conceding more than one goal for the seventh league game in a row.

Wenham insists the club should have pushed harder for one of Antonio Conte’s first-choice defenders last summer and are now paying the price for failing to do so.

“Again I looked at Clement Lenglet yesterday over the course of 90 minutes and I will not be told he is better than Ben Davies,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He is exactly the same level and I have been saying this since we first got him. There is absolutely no difference in quality between the two of them.

“With one player on loan and one player not, with one player counting as homegrown and the other not, there is an easy decision to make at the end of the season and that is to get rid of Lenght.

“It looks like we are paying the price for getting the cheap option and not pushing the boat out to sign a Bastoni or Gvardiol.

“Man City, Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all would have done that if they were in our position. It is so frustrating.

“They would have made things happen. We again went for the cheap option and after a few injuries to the squad we now don’t have the required quality in the squad.”

Spurs sit fifth in the Premier League after their latest loss.

Tottenham are next in action against Crystal Palace on Wednesday (4 January).
