Expert hails ‘best in the world’ Liverpool claim after £72.6m transfer news – ‘it’s amazing’

Noel Whelan has hailed the “amazing” transfer business at Liverpool after the sale of Ben Davies raked in yet another bumper fee.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the transfer set-up at Anfield is “the best in the world” after their recent exploits in the market.

Liverpool confirmed the departure of Davies on Tuesday (19 July) – with the ex-Preston centre-back joining Rangers without making a competitive appearance for the Merseysiders.

As reported by Sky Sports later that day, the Glasgow giants paid £4million for the 26-year-old – who cost the Reds just £1.6million in 2021.

According to Transfermarkt, the defender’s departure brings the Anfield club’s transfer incomings to £72.6million for this summer.

Neco Williams, Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mane, and Marko Grujic have also departed Liverpool in the off-season.

Whelan suggested clearing the decks could lead to more additions at Anfield.

“If you’re making profit on players then you can only be doing a good job,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“This is something that the scouts and the Liverpool board are the best in the world at, we’ve seen that in the past.

“They’ve made millions here for someone who has never set foot on the pitch for Liverpool.

“All in all, when you look at it – it’s amazing business.

“Everyone knows that if you’re trying to bring players in that you have to release others – and they’ve done just that.

Liverpool have already broken their transfer record once this summer to sign Uruguay international striker Darwin Nunez.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (23 July) that the Reds are now working on a big-money agreement for Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham ahead of next summer’s transfer window.
