Expert hails ‘brilliant bit of business’ from Liverpool after source’s new Neco Williams reveal

The sale of Neco Williams to Nottingham Forest for £16million is a “brilliant bit of business” by Liverpool.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ transfer business.

On Monday (11 July) Williams was announced as Nottingham Forest’s latest signing following their promotion to the Premier League.

Football Insider revealed on 8 July that Forest upped their bid to £16million after a late push to secure a deal from Southampton.

The 21-year-old has made 33 senior appearances for Liverpool though only 13 of those have come in the Premier League.

McLeish has praised Liverpool for securing such a high fee for Williams.

“Liverpool, in order to pay the wages to the giants, they have to make ends meet in other ways,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“Chelsea made a good fist of that over the last few years by capturing young players, putting them out on loan then selling some of them and making good money.

“You have to balance the books. That’s a good bit of business. There will be kids who won’t reach the level you want them to but they could do it somewhere else.

“I saw Forest in the play-offs last season and they do need to get players in because they need to go up a level. It’s a brilliant bit of business from Liverpool to get that fee.”

Williams has made 21 appearances for Wales.

He has also scored two goals for his country.
