Expert hits back at Ferdinand for ‘ridiculing’ Liverpool player who will become a superstar

Frank McAvennie has backed Darwin Nunez to develop into a Premier League superstar despite his mixed start at Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted Nunez has the potential to become one of the best strikers in the league.

The 23-year-old joined Anfield in the summer from Benfica in a deal that could cost up to as much as £85million including potential add-ons.

As reported by SPORTBible (2 January), the Uruguay international has had 52 attempts on goal in the Premier League since his arrival but has only found the back of the net five times.

Nunez has also missed 14 big chances, more than any other player in the league.

Speaking on Vibe with Five (1 January), former Man United man Rio Ferdinand likened Nunez to Diego Forlan who “couldn’t hit a barn door at Old Trafford” but went on to become a great player.

McAvennie also backed Nunez to grow into his game.

I think he has the potential to become one of the top strikers,” he told Football Insider.

People ridicule him saying he missed a sitter but you still have to get in there and get the chances. Other players would not have been in there.

Sometimes you think he should take a touch and he hits it first time. He is only young but I think his movement is great. I think he has got the package to be a top, top striker.”
