Expert insists Leeds United fringe players can break through after images emerge
Noel Whelan has suggested that some of the fringe players at Leeds United can use preseason to stake a claim in the side.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites striker said preseason is an important time for the players.
On Thursday (7 July), Leeds confirmed the signing of Luis Sinisterra, 23, from Feyenoord.
The winger becomes Jesse Marsch’s sixth signing of the transfer window.
He joins recent additions Tyler Adams and Marc Roca as the side link up for pre-season.
When asked if he thought plans could change for Marsch during preseason, Whelan told Football Insider: “I think preseason is all about stamping your authority on the side and making it yours and I think that includes how you’re going to play, how you’re going to set up, what formation – whether it’s a three or four at the back.
“I think it’s a good time to really assess and evaluate the players that he’s probably not seen enough of. He can see how people settle into new roles.
“Things can happen in preseason, a little bit of tinkering can always happen. We do know for a fact that a lot of these players can play two or three roles, we’ve seen it over the time with Marcelo Bielsa.
“This is a very important time for managers and players, especially those who have just joined the club. I think everyone is looking for that injury free successful preseason.”
