Expert issues ‘huge’ Alexander Isak claim after what he’s just seen at Newcastle United
Noel Whelan has backed Alexander Isak to become a “huge favourite” at Newcastle after his “fantastic” debut against Liverpool.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 22-year-old “looked like he’d been in the Premier League for five years”.
Isak scored a stunning debut goal in the 2-1 loss against Liverpool on Wednesday (31 August) and saw a second goal chalked off for a marginal offside.
The Sweden international joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad for a reported club-record £60million fee on 26 August.
Isak, who scored 44 goals in 132 games for the Basque club, has signed a six-year deal on Tyneside.
Whelan backed the striker to become a “massive player” for Eddie Howe’s side.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He looked fantastic.
“He looked like he’d been in the Premier League for five years.
“The use of his pace, he’s a strong lad, great on the ball, aerial ability – and the finishes for the two goals. They were the finishes of a high-quality centre-forward.
“He only needed those two chances to put the ball in the back of the net, and he looks like someone who is going to be really handy.
“As long as he stays fit and in that sort of form, he’s going to be a massive player for Newcastle.
“He can be a huge fan favourite alongside Saint-Maximin.”

Newcastle also completed the summer signings of Sven Botman, Nick Pope, and Matt Targett.
The Magpies sit 12th in the Premier League after five games.
