Expert issues ‘mind-boggling’ Man United claim after Antony latest
Man United have paid a “mind-boggling” fee for Ajax star Antony.
That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ recruitment.
On Tuesday (30 August) Man United confirmed they have reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Antony, 22.
Sky Sports claim the deal is worth £85million.
He becomes Man United’s fifth senior signing of the summer and the second to follow Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez earlier in the window.
McLeish is expecting top-tier performances from the winger as soon as he is handed his debut.
“Antony, at the price he is coming in at, when I saw that, is mind-boggling,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“He will be expected to hit the ground running, man of the match performances, roasting full-backs, that’s what I think off the top of my head when I see a guy going for that price.
“I’m not saying there is pressure on him, he must be a terrific player to handle the mentality of that price.
“He has been doing well in Holland for a while and has the Brazilian mentality that makes you think he can have an instant impact.”

Antony scored eight goals in 23 league appearances for Ajax last season.
He also chipped in with four assists as he helped his side win a second successive league title.
In other news, an ex-Fifa official has said Scott McTominay is a ‘lucky boy’ as ‘suspicious’ Man United footage emerges.
