Expert issues ‘surprise’ Jon McLaughlin verdict after what he’s seen at Rangers
Jon McLaughlin will be axed as Rangers’ number one in favour of Allan McGregor.
That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about McLaughlin’s future.
The shot-stopper has started every league and Champions League game for Rangers this season.
McLaughlin experienced a torrid game against Celtic on Saturday (3 November), making several individual errors, as the Gers lost 4-0 at Parkhead.
Rangers then also lost 4-0 to Ajax on their return to the Champions League on Wednesday (7 September).
Kenny expects McLaughlin will be replaced sooner rather than later.
“I think Van Bronckhorst might wish he had played McGregor, it wasn’t a very good performance from McLaughlin,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“When you are a goalkeeper, these things happen. You are the last line of defence and you get punished for your mistakes.
“I would be surprised if McGregor didn’t come in now. He’s 40 years old now but last season he still had it in him and produced some tremendous saves.
“It wouldn’t surprise me, you need to take the pressure off McLaughlin in my opinion. You can’t keep him in there after performances like that because if there is one mistake then he will make a few.
“You don’t want to put more pressure on him.”

McLaughlin has made 41 total appearances for Rangers since joining the club Sunderland in the summer of 2020.
The Gers are next in action against Aberdeen on 10 September.
