Expert issues ‘surprise’ Nick Pope claim as latest Newcastle United deal agreed

Newcastle United have signed Nick Pope at an “absolute bargain” price.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ latest signing.

On Thursday (23 June) Newcastle announced the signing of Pope, 30, on a four-year deal.

Sky Sports reported on the same day that the Magpies have paid Burnley £10million for his services.

The England international will provide competition for Martin Dubravka, who has missed 37 of the last 76 Premier League matches with various foot injuries.

Kenny can’t believe Newcastle have signed Pope for such a small fee.

“Listen, that’s an unbelievable signing at that price,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I have said for a while that they should be looking to sign Pope instead of someone like Henderson at Man United.

“He is so experienced and makes that Newcastle defence stronger in my opinion.

“It’s an absolute bargain. I really like him as a player and I’m surprised more clubs weren’t in for him.

“It’s another great signing from Newcastle even if he isn’t the player some people might have expected them to sign.

“I know he’s 30 but goalkeepers play so much longer than everyone else so he can forge a really good career at Newcastle.”

Pope made 36 appearances for Burnley as they were relegated to the Championship following a poor 2021-22 season.

He has been a Turf Moor since 2016.

In other news, a finance guru has cited a “£400million” Middle East agreement as Newcastle United eye a “landmark” deal.
