Expert: John Lundstram victim of major injustice as Rangers footage analysed

John Lundstram should not have been sent of as Rangers drew with Hibernian last weekend.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about last weekend’s controversial scenes.

As shown on Sky Sports (20 August), Lundstram was shown a straight red card by referee Willie Collum after a cynical foul on Hibs striker Martin Boyle.

Gers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst was left fuming with the decision which ultimately cost his side all three points at Easter Road.

As reported by BBC (22 August), Rangers have appealed the red card although a date is yet to be set for the fast-track hearing.

“It was cynical, what he doing was stopping a counter attack. Who knows what happens, Hibs had a few guys clear of the defence because it was a corner,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“Gerard Houiler, way back in the day, said that those ones should be red cards because of the way team play tactically on the counter attack.

“It’s a big moment of stopping an opposition goal even though the ball isn’t in your half. I’m still in the school of thought where it was one he took for the team.

“I agree with the general assumption that it wasn’t a sending off.”
