Expert: Leeds United to complete striker signing ‘soon’ after source’s Willy Gnonto update

Leeds United must sign a new striker before the transfer window closes as a matter of urgency.

That’s according to ex-Whites stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former side’s need for a new striker.

On Saturday (21 August), Football Insider revealed Leeds United have agreed personal terms with FC Zurich striker Willy Gnonto.

This comes after Patrick Bamford’s injury woes continued into the new Premier League season.

The 28-year-old was forced off holding his groin after just 30 minutes of Leeds United’s 2-2 draw at Southampton (13 August).

Kenny expects Leeds to sign at least one striker before the window closes.

“I am a bit surprised Leeds haven’t signed a striker yet,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It has been the big thing they have needed for quite a while now. You just can’t rely on Bamford’s fitness which is such a shame.

“So they need a player in. Do they need someone younger? I’m not sure. Gelhardt is there and Rodrigo looks like he is playing more advanced but you wouldn’t call him an out-and-out striker.

“I’m certain a striker will arrive soon, the club need one and must be looking for one.

Gnonto spent eight years in the Inter Milan youth system though he did not make an appearance for the club before moving to Zurich in April 2020.

Bamford was only able to make 10 appearances in all competitions last season due to injury.
