Expert: Man City set for ‘huge cash injection’ after £234m Haaland deal agreed
Noel Whelan has insisted Erling Haaland’s reported Man City pay packet just highlights the “difference” between the rest of the Premier League and the “top six” clubs.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Citizens are one of only three teams in the world capable of meeting the 22-year-old’s demands.
According to the Daily Mail (6 October), Haaland is earning almost £900,000-a-week at Man City after factoring in easily-achievable bonuses into his wage.
That equates to around £234million across the duration of his five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.
As per FBref, the wage bills of each of the traditional “big six” clubs (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man United, Tottenham) are bigger than any other Premier League club and sit inside the world’s top 13 spends.
Whelan admitted the outlay on Haaland’s wages is likely to be recouped if he can lead City to an “elusive” Champions League triumph.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “This is just the difference when you’re talking about these top six clubs.
“Even then, there are not many clubs who can pay that kind of money. Man City, PSG, Real Madrid – that’s it.
“It’ll bring money back into the club by winning them trophies, I’m sure. If he wins them that elusive Champions League, he will be worth it. It will provide a huge cash injection.
“If you’re to bring these top players in, you have to pay big money.

“There’s no doubt about it, he is the best striker in the world.
“I don’t think anyone will begrudge him that wage. As long as he keeps scoring goals, the money won’t come into the equation.”
