Expert: Man United resignation is crushing blow as ex-Liverpool man agrees deal

The resignation of veteran club doctor Steve McNally at Man United allows Erik ten Hag to bring in medical staff more familiar with his footballing philosophy.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

McNally spent 16 years as a club doctor at Old Trafford, but the official Man United website confirmed last month (8 December) that he will leave his role at the end of January.

Former Liverpool club doctor Jim Moxon is replacing McNally on an interim basis while the club continues their search for a permanent successor.

While Dinnery believes McNally’s resignation is not ideal, he also believes it provides Ten Hag with a chance to bring more familiar staff with him to Old Trafford.

They’re losing somebody who has a great understanding of the club who’s been through a lot of the good times and worked under a lot of managers,” the medical expert told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

That sort of knowledge, expertise and experience is very difficult to replicate or even replace, but you can look at this as a new opportunity and a fresh challenge under Erik ten Hag.

It’s a chance to look at bringing in somebody that he potentially knows.

He’ll want somebody that he can trust and somebody that understands his philosophies and how he wants to implement the game plan.

The situation itself isn’t ideal, but, they’re better off taking their time and ensuring they have the correct personnel in place for such a key and vital role within the department, as opposed to maybe just trying to shoehorn in.

But that medical team will have a good understanding between them, and one resignation won’t affect day-to-day strategies too much.
