Expert on Tottenham agreeing ‘£250m’ naming rights deal after Google reveal – ‘it’s on the agenda’
Tottenham will prioritise selling their stadium naming rights for a significant commercial revenue rather than keep their venue name clean for the 2028 European Championships bid.
That is the view of Doctor Dan Plumley. speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the difficult position the Spurs board have been put in following threats from UEFA about stadium naming rights.
The UK and Ireland have submitted a bid to host the 2028 Euros, with 14 venues across the nations picked out as host stadiums – including the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’d be a huge commercial boost for the club to have their 62,850-capacity stadium chosen to host games, but Spurs were recently threatened by UEFA over their desire to sell their naming rights.
Football Insider revealed in October that Google and Amazon were in contention for the landmark deal, which is likely to be worth £25million-a-year over 10 years.
As reported by The Times last month (21 December), UEFA want all host stadiums to be “clean” from any branding for the tournament, therefore any stadium sponsorship could derail Tottenham’s bid.
While it’s a tough position for the club to be put in, Plumley believes Spurs will still prioritise selling their stadium naming rights as it is “vital” to their business plan.
“Spurs have got to look to the long-term with it and the stadium naming rights has become vital to their business model from an income generation point of view,” the finance expert told Football Insider.
“We know they’ve really looked hard at that over the years anyway because they haven’t named the stadium anything yet.
“But we know that’s on their agenda.
“So the Euros bid would be nice, but it’s not critical for Spurs that they are a hosting stadium.
“What’s more vital for Spurs down the line is that the naming rights deal generates them a significant chunk of commercial revenue.

“ Also there’s obviously still room for conversations they can have with UEFA – there can still be a dialogue where they can look to leverage a position whereby they can still host games.
“But for me, the stadium naming rights deal is certainly more important than the Euro stadium bid.”
