Expert predicts ‘more to come’ from Jota as ‘surprise’ Celtic transfer confirmed

The permanent signing of Jota is a “fantastic” investment from Celtic.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Hoops’ latest signing.

Celtic announced the permanent signing of Jota, 22, on Friday (1 July).

The forward was on loan at Parkhead from Benfica during the 2021-22 season with an option to buy.

Sky Sports claim Celtic have paid £6.5million and that Benfica have a significant future sell-on percentage included as part of the transfer.

McLeish admits he is surprised Benfica let the forward leave considering how well he played at Celtic last season.

“It does surprise me that he has been let go [by Benfica],” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“When I say let go, I don’t mean let go, it was £6million. He showed so much flair and technical ability last year, he was on a different level.

“There is obviously more to come and that could be a fantastic investment for Celtic. He could be a real target for someone in the future.

“Having won the league last year and him playing a major role, it’s a great signing by Celtic.

“It’s a cracking agreement for Benfica as well.”

Jota made 40 appearances for the Hoops last season, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists.
