Expert shares emphatic verdict on Danny Ings joining Everton as offer rejected – ‘go all the way’

Noel Whelan has urged Everton boss Frank Lampard to push “all the way” for the signature of Danny Ings this month in order to preserve their Premier League status.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 30-year-old has the “right mentality” for a relegation fight with the Toffees.

According to the Daily Mail (4 January), Everton have had a loan bid for Ings rejected – with Aston Villa only willing to let the striker leave permanently.

The report claims the Merseysiders are joined by fellow strugglers West Ham, Southampton and Bournemouth in the race for the England international’s signature.

Everton sit inside the relegation zone on goal difference ahead of their return to Premier League action against bottom club Southampton next week (14 January).

Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has returned from injury in recent weeks but the Toffees have struggled to recapture the form which saw him net 21 goals in the 2020-21 season.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “They definitely need the boost from bringing new faces into the football club.

“At the minute, they’re lower than a snake’s belly. There’s a real divide between the fans, the board, and the manager. That comes from results.

“But Danny Ings is a player who has the right mentality to come into this situation.

“He’s a fighter, and that’s what Everton need right now.

“He would bring that commitment, hard work, and aggressiveness into this situation – and probably raise the games of a lot of other players as well.

“I think if I was Lampard, I would be pushing the board to go all the way to get him through the door.”
