Expert shares ‘serious’ Joe Gomez ‘injury’ claim amid ‘shock’ Liverpool verdict

Alan Hutton has insisted he is not “shocked” to see Joe Gomez return to form at Liverpool as he builds confidence again after a “serious injury”.

The former Spurs and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old’s stellar performance against Man City and Erling Haaland on Sunday (16 October) may have kick-started his Anfield career.

Gomez has started eight games so far this season, with six of those outings coming in his natural centre-back berth – including Wednesday’s (19 October) win over West Ham.

According to The Times’ Paul Joyce (19 October), England boss Gareth Southgate will monitor the progress of the defender in the coming weeks as the Liverpool star hopes to make next month’s World Cup squad.

The former Charlton star spent almost all of the 2020-21 season on the sidelines with a serious patella injury and made just four league starts last term.

Nevertheless, he signed a fresh five-year deal at Anfield in July of this year.

Hutton suggested Gomez is now repaying the faith shown on him and is “building confidence game-by-game” next to mainstay Virgil van Dijk.

He told Football Insider: “I’m not shocked to see this.

“When him and Van Dijk had the partnership before, they were solid. Both of them were so unlucky to pick up serious injuries at the same time.

“It was always going to take Gomez time to get back to where we know he can be.

“But playing against one of the best strikers in the world in Haaland has brought it out of him. He was good against Rangers in the Champions League, as well.

“It’s just about confidence for him, and building it game-by-game.”
