Expert slams ‘diabolical’ Man United trio – ‘I couldn’t believe what I was seeing’
Paddy Kenny has slammed the Man United defenders who started against Arsenal on Saturday (23 April).
The former Leeds United stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Red Devils missed Harry Maguire.
The Man United captain was dropped to the bench for Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal, with Victor Lindelof starting instead.
Raphael Varane and Alex Telles were unable to clear a straightforward cross in the moments before Nuno Taveres’ opener as they both swung and missed in an attempt to clear the ball upfield.
Kenny described the defending as “diabolical” and admitted he couldn’t believe what he was watching.
“The defending at the weekend was diabolical by the way, Lindelof, Varane, Telles,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“They really missed Maguire back there. It was an embarrassment, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
“For all the rubbish that has been thrown at him, that first goal doesn’t go in if Maguire is playing.
“He would have got that cleared away. I know there were other reasons he wasn’t playing but it just showed how much they miss him when he isn’t there.
“Can he get better? Of course he can. Maguire will hold his hands up and say he hasn’t been good enough, but who has? There is no one there who has been good this season.
“Why can’t Ten Hag get him playing like he does for England? I have touched on this before, Man United are poor throughout the whole team. It’s not just one person.”

Man United are next in action against Chelsea on Thursday (28 April).
They remain sixth in the table.
