Expert suggests real reason Tottenham could re-sign Dennis Cirkin after update

Alan Hutton has suggested Tottenham are interested in triggering the buy-back clause for Dennis Cirkin to send him on loan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs right-back said that the Lilywhites will want to help Cirkin’s development by loaning him to a “better team” than Sunderland.

According to the Sun (8 October), Spurs have been looking at a potential return for the 20-year-old despite only selling him last year.

The defender has recently returned from injury and Antonio Conte’s side are said to be due to watch him again in the build-up to the January transfer window.

The left-back appeared on the Spurs first team bench five times in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

Last year the Sunderland Echo reported (13 August) that the Lilywhites have a buyback option of £6million which is valid until the end of June 2024.

Hutton said the London club won’t be looking to make Cirkin part of the first team if they re-sign him.

You put a buy-back clause in there because you do believe there is potential but maybe not at this moment in time,” he told Football Insider.

He has obviously gone away, fulfilled some of that potential and they see him getting better, that is why you want to bring them back to the club.

It will not be for right now.

It is a case of getting your hands on a talented player, bringing them back in the fold and trying to progress even more.

Bring him back to the club with a view to maybe go on loan to a better team, no disrespect to Sunderland.

You obviously see something within a player to put that clause within the contract details.

It is probably more about further development, coming back in to the fold to then go back out again.
