Expert suggests the reason Aston Villa could now sign Tammy Abraham after bid reveal

Noel Whelan has claimed Unai Emery could be the key to persuading Tammy Abraham to return to Aston Villa as Roma prepare to sell the striker.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there is a “much healthier environment” at Villa Park since Emery replaced Steven Gerrard at the club.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (14 November), Roma are open to “interesting” bids for Abraham after his struggles in front of goal this season.

Football Insider revealed last week (10 November) that Villa have set their sights on signing an A-list striker in the mid-season window as the club’s board look to back new boss Emery.

England international Abraham, who spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Villa Park and helped them gain promotion, has netted just four goals this term.

That is a contrast to his haul of 27 across all competitions in the 2021-22 season.

When asked if Aston Villa would be a tempting option for Abraham if they were to make a move, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think it is.

“If Roma are looking to get a big fee for him and take the money, then there’ll be a lot of clubs interested in pursuing him.

“He’s a fantastic striker, there’s no doubt about that. He missed out on the World Cup just because he was having a bad run of form – it happens.

“Abraham has been at Aston Villa before, but it will seem a lot more attractive to him now.

“There’s a fantastic manager with a real track record in place, it’s a lot more stable – and it’s a much healthier environment now.

“Aston Villa won’t be the only club looking to get him, but they’ve got a good project to sell him.”
