Expert: This may be real reason Alexandro Bernabei yet to make Celtic debut

Frank McAvennie has suggested Greg Taylor’s form this season is keeping Alexandro Bernabei out of the Celtic team.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops striker also said Bernabei, 21, is not “up to speed yet” following his arrival earlier this summer.

Taylor, 24, has started in both of Celtic’s Scottish Premiership games this term with Bernabei an unused substitute.

As quoted by Football Scotland (9 August), Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou said Taylor has started this season “really well”.

The manager added that he brought in Bernabei to help Taylor to “be the best player he can” as well as providing another option in the left-back position.

Bernabei moved to Parkhead from Lanus at the end of June.

When asked why Bernabei is yet to make his debut for the Hoops, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He won’t be up to speed yet.

I think to do the job that Ange wants, you’ve got to be super fit. Greg Taylor is super fit, he’s had a great pre-season.

Bernabei will be practising all the time and until he gets used to that, there’s no point putting him on. There’s no point playing him for the fans to turn round and say he doesn’t look comfortable.

I wouldn’t read too much into it but Greg Taylor has just stepped up. He’s going to fight for his place and that’s what it’s all about.
