Expert: Tottenham are in favour of game-changing Premier League broadcasting development

Tottenham would back proposals to end the 3pm blackout in England.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

As per The Athletic (12 October), the EFL has moved towards lifting England’s traditional 3pm television blackout, issuing a request for proposals for broadcast rights from 2024-25, when its agreement with Sky Sports expires.

In recent years, there has been much discussion about whether the Premier League should move away from the 3pm blackout and instead show all games through a Netflix-style subscription service.

Wenham insists this is something Tottenham would be in favour of.

“I think in this day and age, if the game was on TV at 3pm it would not stop people going to the game,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The idea that 3pm kick-offs are part and parcel of the game, Tottenham have had about two in the last two years.

“People go to the game. If you are going to go then you are going to regardless. I get that lower down the pyramid it is different, I understand that.

“If you are in Grimsby and your game is on TV so you can have Young’s fish and chips in front of the TV instead of going to the ground, you might do that.

“For Premier League clubs it makes zero difference. People like going to live games and seeing things in person.

“For Tottenham, it would make absolutely no difference, we rarely have those 3pm games in any case so I’m sure Tottenham would be in favour or at least indifferent to the move.”
