Expert: Tottenham outcast set for ‘proper first XI chance’ after Antonio Conte ‘sign’

Djed Spence may be set to be given a “proper chance” at Tottenham after a “sign” from Antonio Conte.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Before Saturday’s (15 October) game against Everton, Spence, 22, had only played one minute of senior football this season, a cameo against former side Nottingham Forest on 8 August.

He made a further cameo appearance against the Toffees, replacing Matt Doherty at the end of the game.

Wenham insists this may have been a subtle message to Spence from Conte.

“It was only a minute but I was really pleased that Spence came on again,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He is now slowly getting more and more involved under Conte which tells me he is starting to play the way Conte wants him to play in training.

“Hopefully he stays fit and can get 90 minutes in the tank against Nottingham Forest in the cup but I think this was a sign.

“Conte doesn’t do things for the sake of it. With Emerson Royal out injured and questions over his future you wonder if that was a sign from Conte telling Spence that he will get a proper chance at some point.”

Spence made 46 appearances for Nottingham Forest during the 2021-22 season after joining the side from then-Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

He helped Forest return to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.
