Expert: Tottenham told to release Alfie Whiteman as deal terminated

Tottenham should not offer Alfie Whiteman a new deal despite another successful loan spell in Sweden.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Whiteman, 24, has returned to Tottenham after a loan spell with Swedish side Degerfors IF.

He made 21 appearances for the club but was dropped for the club’s final seven games of the season.

Wenham claims it is now time for Whiteman to leave Spurs.

“It’s convenient that he’s homegrown and club-trained,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s now 24 and has been on loan in the Swedish league twice. His contract is up at the end of the season as well.

“I thought he was going to get his chance two seasons ago when he played a lot in pre-season and saved a few penalties up at Milton Keynes.

“I thought that was the period for him but since then he has just gone on loan after loan. I get that goalkeepers can come in later.

“Emi Martinez didn’t play a game for Arsenal until he was 28 after being out on loan at various clubs. I understand that keepers come through later.

“That being said, I think next summer will be the time to move him on.”

Whiteman has made 44 appearances for Spurs’ various youth sides.

He has also played for England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 level.
