FA has ‘real problem’ on its hands as Liverpool controversy analysed – Robinson
Paul Robinson has called on the authorities to act after Liverpool fans let off flares during the FA Community Shield on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said fan behaviour is “becoming a real problem” in English football.
Liverpool beat Man City 3-1 at the King Power Stadium on Saturday to win the FA Community Shield.
A statement from the FA (30 July) confirmed an investigation has been launched into the flares that were used during the match.
The statement added that the governing authorities will take new stronger measures to clamp down on anti-social behaviour at football matches this season.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incident, Robinson said: “It is becoming a problem.
“We have seen an increase in pyrotechnics and pitch invasions over the last 12 months. It is something that has to be addressed this year. It has become far too regular.
“The security has to be better. As a goalkeeper, I was concerned for years. You are a real security risk because you are so close to the crowd. Goalkeepers are the easiest targets.

“Pyrotechnics are difficult to police. If clubs introduced airport style scanners it would delay fans getting in. It would spoil the experience. There has to be a way of stopping it though.
“It is happening far too often now. It is a real problem.”
