Fabio Carvalho: Liverpool could sign forward ‘for cheaper’ price after Sky update – Whelan
Noel Whelan has insisted Liverpool will still pursue a deal for Fabio Carvalho despite their deadline day setback.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Anfield club won’t be “walking away” and could even strike a deal before the end of the season.
According to Sky Sports (1 February), Liverpool “remain confident” that Carvalho, 19, will be a Reds player next season after they ran out of time to seal a deal on Monday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side must now negotiate a compensation package for the youngster or risk a transfer fee being decided by a tribunal.
The Lisbon-born midfielder has netted seven goals in 18 Championship outings this term.
Whelan suggested the former England under-18 international will be “really excited” about the prospect of a Liverpool switch.
“I don’t think they’ll be walking away from the deal,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“The interest was concrete but they just couldn’t quite get it over the line. I think it’ll end up being sorted out in the summer.
“They won’t lose interest in the space of four months – he’s a young player and they could possibly even get him for cheaper at the end of the season when he’s out of contract.
“Carvalho would be mad to now turn his nose up at joining Liverpool. I’m sure he would have been really excited about joining the club in the summer, and I can’t see any reason why a potential deal would go away.
“Something could even be agreed before the season ends.”

Carvalho scored on his full debut for Fulham in a 3-1 loss against Southampton last season.
He has started 15 of the Cottagers’ 28 Championship games this term.
